Background
This studio project will give the student the opportunity to develop and design a mixeduse building in the diverse U Street, NW neighborhood and historic district in Washington, DC. Projects must respond to a historic mixed-use context and
incorporate existing historic buildings on the site and surroundingthe site. For this assignment, thestudent will: explore general zoning and building code constraints, prepareasite and context analysis, propose a site response, and develop a schematic design for the project including core/use allocations, overall building massing and façade development.

Program
This project is for the design of a mixed-use building incorporating an existing historic structure fronting U Street and other existing buildings adjacent the currently underutilized corner parcel occupied by agas station. The project is located in the U Street neighborhood and is subject to the requirements of the DC zoning including applicable overlays. Students may retain the existing uses in place or propose new uses for the existing spaces as supported and informed by market feasibility analysis.
